Adrian joins fight for Financial Education in Schools

APPG for financial education

Adrian Bailey today joined the All Party Parliamentary Group on Financial Education for Young People at the launch event in the House of Commons.

The group is calling for more resources to be made available for schools to support financial education, ensuring young people understand money and debt.  It is supported by consumer groups and banks including Which?, Citizens Advice, HSBC, and Nationwide Building Society.

Adrian said:

“It has never been more important that we equip the next generation with the skills and confidence they need to be in control of their money, and we must do more to help young people to be better prepared as they leave school.

This is an issue which I know many of my constituents feel strongly about, and many have written in to me to share their concerns about the lack of financial education in schools.

I am pleased to be a member of this group, and hope that through working together we will be able to raise awareness of the need for financial education and press for the government to make this a priority.”

Martin Lewis, creator of MoneySavingExpert.com and pictured above with Adrian, who is supporting the campaign commented:

“What’s been deeply frustrating campaigning on this over the years is while virtually everybody agrees it’s needed and people often say ‘I wish I’d had it’, making it happen is a nightmare. That’s why this co-ordinated effort is so exciting. Schools are the key to breaking the debt cycle leading to less mis-selling, fewer bad debts, better consumers and could save the public coffers a fortune.”
