MP Backs Edspledge.com

I am today backing Ed Milliband, Secretary of State at the Department for Climate Change, as he endeavours to conjure up support ahead of the Copenhagen Summit. I would encourage my constituents to log onto edspledge.com and back the Government in their attempt to pass a deal on climate change at the Copenhagen Summit this december.

At edspledge.com, you can find a sign up box that allows people to show their support for the campaign by co-signing an open letter to David Cameron following Ken Clark’s comments criticising wind farms. Since the remarks, over 3,000 have signed up, forcing Ken Clark to back down over his statement.

People who submit their email addresses will receive exclusive updates about the campaign. You can also follow Ed Milliband and his efforts for climate change through Twitter and Facebook at facebook.com/copenhagenpledge.

Copenhagen will be a historical event, with 180 countries joining together to come up with a new international deal that will tackle climate change. This can not come at a better time, with extreme weather conditions, ever rising seal levels causing massive floods in many countries, water shortages, food shortages and the extinction of many of our most precious species.

The Labour party has led the way internationally on combating climate change. We are proud to say that we are the first to put climate change at the heart of the G8, the first to call a UN Security council meeting on the subject, and the first to introduce a long term legally binding framework for emission reductions.

Our hopes are that by 2020, more than 1.2 million people will have green jobs, 7 million homes will get home energy makeovers, over 1.5 million household will be supported to produce their own clean energy, 40% of electricity will be from low carbon sources and other renewable energies, we will be importing half the gas that we normally would, and the average new car will emit 40% less carbon than it currently does.

Please join us in making this dream of ours a reality.
