Local MP Welcomes Latest Employment Figures and Labour’s Support for Jobs Local MP Adrian Bailey today called for continued investment in Sandwell to help people back into work. Speaking as the economy turned out of the recession and the country started to show signs of recovery, In Sandwell, unemployment figures in the 1990s peaked by affecting a total of 20,365 people equalling a total of 11.7% of the local working population. Comparatively the recent recession has affected a total of 13,609 people, a total of 7.7% of the local population. Local Adrian Bailey MP said: “We’ve got to keep investing in jobs through the recovery. I am backing the Future Jobs Fund which will bring more jobs to the area, jobs that David Cameron wants to slash. In previous recessions unemployed young people were left on the scrapheap. We can’t let this happen again. That’s why I support Labour’s guarantees –an education or training place for young people up to 18; and a job or training place for 18-24 year olds out of work for six months, both funded by a one off tax on bankers’ bonuses. Extra investment has helped keep unemployment round here at under 2.5m – over 0.5m lower than in the 90s recessions. We must keep investing to help everyone back into work” Notes: - Figures are sourced from nomis- https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/Default.asp
